Horseback Riding on Cape Town's Scenic Beaches

Are you looking for a scenic hack of a lifetime? Then horseback-riding on one of Cape Town's most pristine beaches should be on your horse holiday list. We discovered a racing stable that caters safe and well-ridden horses for beginners as well as forward moving steeds for the experienced rider. Read about a memorable horseback ride in Cape Town on a breed that we at Equestrian Communications hold dear and near to our hearts.

Beach Ride Of A Lifetime

The ocean's tumbling waves crash powerfully yet with gentle consideration onto a peaceful shore of white sand. The wind is ever present on this strip of coastline, which beauty undoubtedly would silent even the likes of Keats and Blake. Noordhoek beach surpassed every expectation I had while skimming through the Google search results of horseback rides in Cape Town.

My senses are greedy as I devour and soak in the smell of kelp, salt and the crisp sea breeze that wraps around me. "So, this is what heaven feels like," I contemplate while my body rocks to the calming motion I've known all too well my whole life. Snorts, a surprising patience, and caring nudges on my shins is what I receive as I attempt to capture the moment on my iPhone.

Allouette is an 8-year-old bay thoroughbred gelding and my partner for today's outing. His long mane floats in the wind mimicking black silk ribbons. I stroke his neck. He has that spirited disposition which characterizes most former racehorses. We wade in the ocean. My sneakers soak in the splashes every time Allouette pulls up his front legs is sheer delight. April in South Africa is the equivalent to a European Autumn. The climate is near to perfect, not too hot and never too cold. The horseback ride on the beach is surprisingly undisturbed by other guests. A lone jogger greets us with a smile; some dogs run along with their owners scouting at the horses from a distance.

The Dunes Racing Stables

Though you are not allowed to gallop on the beach during the day, Allouette's stable mates are exercised here every morning at sun-up. The Dunes racing stables are run and owned by former jockey and head trainer Mike Stewart and his wife. Through more than 25-years Mike Stewart and his wife have devoted their lives to their passion for one of the most remarkable if not beautiful breeds. Their love for Thoroughbreds is apparent from the minute you step into the old-fashioned brick laid stable. It almost feels like you could be in a traditional yard in Europe.

This is not your average racing stable.

The Dunes' location has proven not only to be therapeutic for tourists but for the 40 something racehorses that are worked each morning in the forgiving soft sand. This unique combination of soft ground for gallops and cooling strolls in salt water makes for a restorative training that doesn't strain nor benumbs tendons and ligaments. Mike states that this is what adds to his horses winning streak apart from their meticulous breeding that is.

Getting There

Gathering that you're located in downtown Cape Town:

If you haven't rented a car Uber is probably the easiest and cheapest way to get yourself to Noordhoek. The 45 min. drive in itself is beautiful. Sit back and enjoy spectacular views of Table Mountain as your driver twists and turns your way out of the hustle and bustle of the city through the Silver Mine Nature Reserve as you approach your Noordhoek destination.

What to Bring

Well, it goes without saying that is a good idea to pack your riding breeches. Sneakers with a grip are fine for the ride, and The Dunes provide riding hats so you can pack light!

Remember that this is more of a peaceful horseback ride as trot and canter are not allowed to protect the beach - but it's worth every second. Oh and do remember to charge your smartphone for pictures while on your beach ride.  More importantly, you'll need a full battery for calling an Uber to get home. We recommend you to bring your smartphone charger as Uber drivers are super sweet and allow you to charge your phone while in the car.
